PE teacher Belinda Norton shares the five things she has learned in 25 years in the industry

A PE teacher who looks better now she is in her 40s than she did in her 20s has shared the five things she has learned in 25 years in the industry that have completely changed her health and body.

Belinda Norton, 45, from the Gold Coast, said ‘successful body health’ is less about a short-term quick fix and more about being consistent with your approach to diet and exercise.

Belinda religiously adheres to five ‘tips and tricks’ in order to stay in shape all year round.

1. Remember food is your ‘boost or your poison’

’80 percent of all successful health comes in food consumption and unfortunately we cannot exercise off poor food choices,’ Belinda wrote on her Instagram page.

‘Also drinking alcohol is like eating double at every meal. Sorry.’

2. Eat as many raw fruits and vegetables as you like

On the flip side, you can eat as much raw fruit and vegetables as you like – as the PE teacher said these are ‘free’ foods that will not impact your waistline.

‘Remember real earth grown organic food – not frozen or in a packet,’ Belinda said.

She personally likes to eat one whole carrot and two cucumbers daily, because the fiber in carrots helps to keep your blood sugar levels under control, while eating cucumbers ‘hydrates the body and leads to health benefits including weight loss, balanced hydration, digestive regularity and lower blood sugar levels’.

‘Grab a bag of carrots and cucumbers the next time you’re in the supermarket and munch munch munch,’ she said.

‘They really are the perfect snacks.’

3. Move every day

Whether it’s walking, running, skipping, hopping, crawling, swimming or stretching, Belinda said moving your body every single day is key to good health.

Typically, the 45-year-old mixes up her cardio and resistance sessions, but she always tries to get in some form of movement whether that is walking or hill sprints or just a swim.

4. Quality over quantity

When it comes to your exercise, Belinda said it’s always quality over quantity.

She added that women are ‘born endurance athletes’.

‘To ensure an energy boost or a fine-tuned healthy body, move fast.’

‘Think improving energy. Improving digestive function. Think improving muscle composition. Don’t think weight loss,’ she said.

Rather than thinking about losing weight, which is bound to set you up for failure, she said you should think about following a ‘healthy balanced lifestyle’.

‘Make it a routine – make body health a habit not a challenge.’

Previously, Belinda said ‘real, whole grown foods’ are the number one secret to a fit physique inside and out in the new year.

At the beginning of 2022, Belinda said her goal for the year was to ‘encourage others’ – and her first piece of advice is to boost intake of raw, wholesome foods.

‘It truly is the magic elixir to our bodies performance level. These earth-grown foods promote internal health from digestion to blood boosting components,’ she wrote.

‘I encourage you to eat raw vegetables daily and increase your consumption by adding vegetables to every meal including breakfast.’

‘The fact is food is more than just calories, its information that our cells need to function, it is the information that our metabolism can use to either run efficiently or sluggishly,’ she said.

‘When we eat sugars, fruit juice or refined carbs, it goes straight to the liver, where it starts manufacturing fat, triggering insulin resistance and causing chronically elevated blood insulin levels thus driving the body to store everything meaning it holds toxicity.’

She added that ‘real’ foods like vegetables and low glycemic fruits, healthy fats (nut seeds avocado and olives), gluten free whole grains, legumes and responsibly sourced proteins and seafood) give your cells the information they need to function at their very best .

‘They improve skin, hair, brain function, mind clarity and immunity,’ she said.

‘Eating well should not only be about quantity but more imperative with quality.’
